Even though Roxette couldn't ultimately leave behind the same legacy, the group did outperform ABBA on the singles chart, achieving four No.ġ hits on the Billboard Hot 100 between 19. While seemingly not interested in doing so, even by default Roxette could not associate its image with the now-iconic ABBA, another Swedish pop group that struggled for recognition in America while still intact in the late 70s, but that managed, through revisionism beginning in the early 90s, to grow into something more intriguing as a legacy.ĪBBA did have some Billboard Top 10 singles and one No. The group's success in the United States alone was arguable. Though there is no firm figure, Roxette is believed to have worldwide sales of as many as 75 million copies of its albums and singles, no minor achievement for any pop act. The 1992 release Tourism: Songs from Studios, Stages, Hotelrooms & Other Strange Places – with a recording of audience members singing along to the tune of the group's biggest hit, "It Must Have Been Love" – exemplifies this temporary but impressive hold Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson had. Regardless, there was a time in 1991 when Roxette could command an arena filled with tens of thousands of fans in places as diverse as Buenos Aires, Frankfurt and Sydney. Perhaps, years after the fact, Roxette's popularity can be difficult to understand or appreciate in light of what critics considered its infectious but nonetheless lightweight music, lightweight even compared to what was otherwise on the airwaves at the time. Formed in 1986, the duo became an international act in the late 1980s, when they released their breakthrough album Look Sharp!. The group claims influences ranging from The Beatles to Blondie to new wave music to Joni Mitchell and Aretha Franklin. In 100 years’ time, people will remember the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Joni.In the end of the 80s and in the early 90s, Roxette, a pop-rock duo from Halmstad, Sweden, stood among the top bands in worldwide sales and notoriety, brandishing a simple yet effective blend of pop with a slight edge and occasional hints of dance. I’m proud to have been a part of her life. I wanted her to be as free as possible, to be as brilliant as possible. Like the song suggests, I asked her to marry me but I think she thought I wanted a “wife” to cook meals and so on, which was never my intention. I’m sad that it’s about me again, but it’s so brilliant. I remember leaving the house to give her the space to finish My Old Man. River made me sad, because it chronicled the end of our relationship, but also elated, because it was such a beautiful song and she had the courage to bare her soul. She didn’t finish it until after we parted. We were a couple for two years – and I watched her write many of the songs on Blue. So Joni witnessed the birth of Crosby, Stills and Nash. We smoked a big one and Stephen played this fabulous song, You Don’t Have to Cry, with David and myself singing harmonies. The Byrds had thrown David out and Stephen’s band, Buffalo Springfield, were over. David Crosby and Stephen Stills were having dinner with her. When I arrived, I could hear voices in the house. Later, I flew from London to spend a few days with her in Los Angeles. I met Joni in 1967 when I was in the Hollies and we played Ottawa. She is totally real and self-invented and it’s one of the best things in my life that I’ve known her. Maybe she sensed the wreckage of my next 15 years and didn’t want to be tied down. When I was taking her to meet my family in North Carolina, between flights she suddenly said she had to return to California and left me at the airport - at the altar, so to speak. After travelling, your home has a different context within the world and California captures that. It’s pure Joni.Ĭalifornia, which she wrote in Paris, is a coming home song. It thrives on her voice, melody and personality. Blue’s brilliance lies in its minimalism. There were very few people in the sessions. It felt natural and easy for me to play on the album. She quit smoking and her voice was excellent. It was a calm, peaceful, amazing, creative time. I’m not saying I was sober, but my then addiction to heroin was relatively quiet. We moved in the same circles and ended up together. After a year or two travelling in Europe with her portable dulcimer, she came back with lots of songs and ideas. She had a house and an automobile and wanted to have fun and see the world. ![]() The solo tracks are what made the album's reputation, though, particularly the horrifying "Dark Globe," a first-person portrait of schizophrenia that's seemingly the most self-aware song this normally whimsical songwriter ever created. Like many of the "band" tracks, "Here I Go" is a Barrett solo performance with overdubs by Mike Ratledge, Hugh Hopper, and Robert Wyatt of the Soft Machine the combination doesn't always particularly work, as the Softs' jazzy, improvisational style is hemmed in by having to follow Barrett's predetermined lead, so on several tracks, like "No Good Trying," they content themselves with simply making weird noises in the background. The downright Kinksy "Here I Go" is in the same style, although it's both more lyrically direct and musically freaky, speeding up and slowing down seemingly at random. The much bouncier "Love You" sounds like a sunny little Carnaby Street pop song along the lines of an early Move single, complete with music hall piano, until the listener tries to parse the lyrics and realizes that they make no sense at all. The opening "Terrapin" seems to go on three times as long as its five-minute length, creating a hypnotic effect through Barrett's simple, repetitive guitar figure and stream of consciousness lyrics. Surprisingly, Jones' tracks are song for song much stronger than the more-lauded Floyd entries. ![]() Half the album was recorded by Barrett's former bandmates Roger Waters and Dave Gilmour, and the other half by Harvest Records head Malcolm Jones. Wisely, The Madcap Laughs doesn't even try to sound like a consistent record. I'm having a hard time tearing myself away from Total War WH (since 2016, heh). I've been keeping my eye on this one as I love turned based fantasy games. Originally posted by cjhangen:What are some things that you like about this game more than TW3? Lots of combinations possible already, I haven't had much technical problems either, 4 crashes to desktop in about 140 hours played and two of those where before the first hot fix. Or at least general customisation in game.Īnd it's all still just beginning for Age of Wonders 4, and it's a hell of a good start I would say. I've honestly been expecting unit customisation in total war since Shogun 2 had it for generals in multiplayer. It's exciting to try out all the different faction combinations and having some customisability. It's also a sequel that really does new things and is not just another number in a series as so many sequels are these days. With AOW4, I'm good with just a mod to add more faction colours. 2 already has enough diversity in factions for me, 3 offers nothing substantial new, while 2 added a nice amount of highly requested factions.Īlso it's nice to be able to play it without updates wrecking all mods which warhammer games desperately need. I don't care to fight doomstacks of chaos, don't care for more chaos factions either. I do like Warhammer 2 total war quite a bit, won't pick up the third game until it's in some huge sale because it adds little. ![]() Make sure to include your Excel’s file name and extension at the end of the path. ![]() If the GM’s standards are low or vague, subordinates aren’t very likely to do much better. If the general manager sets high standards, key managers will usually follow suit. Of these three, performance standards are the single most important element because, broadly speaking, they determine the quality of effort the organization puts out. Three elements dictate a company’s work environment: (1) the prevailing performance standards that set the pace and quality of people’s efforts (2) the business concepts that define what the company is like and how it operates and (3) the people concepts and values that prevail and define what it’s like to work there. And that’s as true in small- and medium-sized companies as it is in giants like General Motors and General Electric. But whatever the environment a general manager inherits from the past, shaping-or reshaping-it is a critically important job. ![]() It helps you define the scope of the job, set priorities, and see important interrelationships among these areas of activity.Įvery company has its own particular work environment, its legacy from the past that dictates to a considerable degree how its managers respond to problems and opportunities. What makes it important is its status as an organizing framework for the vast majority of activities general managers perform. This list shouldn’t be surprising the fundamentals of a general manager’s job should sound familiar after all. And they do that by focusing on the six key tasks that constitute the foundations of every general manager’s job: shaping the work environment, setting strategy, allocating resources, developing managers, building the organization, and overseeing operations. But their priority is avoiding that kind of situation. Sure, they’ll take such sweeping actions if they’re in a situation where that’s necessary or desirable. They know that sustained superior performance can’t be built on one-shot improvements like restructurings, massive cost reductions, or reorganizations. Great general managers do the same thing. Great coaches stress fundamentals-the basic skills and plays that make a team a consistent winner. Together they’re the key to setting priorities and making the right things happen-which is what general management is all about. Individually, none of these tasks is new or startling. Giving periodic tough-minded performance appraisals and organizing around people, not concepts, are two key practices the best GMs follow.įinally, successful GMs supervise operations and implementation: producing sound plans, spotting problems and opportunities early, and responding aggressively to them. They also allocate resources to back up the company’s strategic focus, not to prop up marginal businesses or support low-payout projects.ĭeveloping superior managers and building a strong organization are two more critical general manager jobs. The best GMs spearhead strategy formulation they don’t just preside over it. ![]() ![]() To shape the organization’s work environment, top GMs use three levers: (1) high performance standards, (2) strong business concepts, and (3) clearly defined people concepts. Whatever their leadership style, they invariably focus their efforts on the six tasks that lay the foundation for effective performance-their own and that of the entire organization. ![]() For this, you need a PHP parser, a web server, and a web browser. Server Side Scripting: This is the traditional purpose of why it is built & used for generating dynamic content. There are three main fields where these scripts are used: And anything which any other CGI (Common Gateway Interface) programming language can do.These help in efficiently handling (usually large amounts of) data, especially when it’s something that can be tabulated. Hence computer programmers have come up with something called “databases”. Now think about this: applications like Facebook, emails, etc., will have lots of user accounts, right? So managing such data is a little tricky. Also, all the user accounts will obviously be present on the server. Now this server is where all the pages you code for are actually stored. Whenever you type in a URL or request by clicking on any link (which again is nothing but indirectly supplying an URL,) the request is forwarded by your web browser (Firefox, Chrome, etc.) over the internet to a ‘server’. It is suitable for the output and construction of dynamic web pages for web applications, e-commerce applications, and database applications. We say a program designed for automated work by writing a script-based language (code lines). The software used to build web applications is an open-source, server-side scripting language. PHP is a pre-processor for hypertext, which used to stand for home pages. PHP is a script on the server-side used for the creation of Static or Dynamic Web sites or Web applications. ![]()
